When you apply for a mortgage, your credit report may be pulled as part of the loan process. That inquiry can trigger what’s known as a “trigger lead”—a signal to credit bureaus that allows other lenders to purchase your information and start contacting you with unsolicited offers. These calls and emails can feel overwhelming, especially when you're already working with a trusted lender like Peoples Bank.
Trigger leads are legal and commonly used by other mortgage companies to solicit new business. The credit bureaus sell your data—including your name, credit score range, and the fact that you’re shopping for a loan—to multiple lenders, sometimes resulting in a flood of competing offers.
Receiving multiple calls or emails from unfamiliar lenders can cause confusion, lead to misinformation, or distract you from working with the lender you trust. Worse, some of these solicitations may sound official or attempt to impersonate your chosen bank, making it harder to distinguish between legitimate and unwanted offers.
You can take control of your personal information by opting out of trigger leads. Visit OptOutPrescreen.com or call 1-888-5-OPT-OUT (1-888-567-8688) to start the process. This free service, operated by the major credit bureaus, allows you to opt out for five years or permanently by submitting a signed form.
Visit donotcall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222. When you register your number at donotcall.gov, you’ll get an email with a link you need to click within 72 hours to complete your registration. After 31 days of being registered, you should stop receiving calls. If you continue getting unwanted calls, you can report it to the FTC.
At Peoples Bank, we believe in transparency and protecting your privacy. If you’re applying for a loan with us and have questions about trigger leads or how to reduce unwanted solicitations, we’re happy to guide you through the process.
